I currently live in the happiest country of the whole world, Finland. But is it my ideal place to live? Don’t get me wrong. I love living here from March to August. I adore the magic of Finland’s spring and summer and the energy boost I get from the light. But that another half of the year is so dark it forces me to escape.

Upon reflection (though subject to change as I explore more possibilities), my dream life now includes basking in Finland’s seasonal glory from spring to summer and retreating to another locale for autumn and winter.

So, where is this elusive place? Let’s break it down with my non-negotiable criteria:

  • Winter Sunlight: A place boasting more sunlight hours during winter than Finland – a criterion met by approximately 70% of the countries.
  • Bike-Friendly Weather and City: I yearn for a location where biking is not just a fair-weather activity. Safe biking lanes without the hazard of slippery icy roads are a must.
  • Convenient Accessibility: An easy-to-reach destination by plane from Finland, coupled with a robust train network connecting to nearby cities. I wanna explore!
  • Solo Traveler Safety: Above all, the chosen place should feel safe for a solo traveler like myself.
  • Housing Essentials: Lastly, the ideal housing should come equipped with reliable essentials – good WiFi, an efficient air conditioner, and a functional heating system to ensure comfort throughout my stay.

Then I made another list of things that I’d like my new winter hometown to have. Not a must, but definitely a big plus:

  • A Spot for a Dip: A nearby swimming locale is a delightful addition, especially if I can pedal my way there. Lakes steal my heart, but a well-maintained pool is a welcome alternative.
  • Musical Haven: I crave a place or community where I can continue crafting my music, ensuring my creative rhythm remains uninterrupted.
  • Proximity to Essentials: Grocery shopping spots in close proximity are essential. While I don’t dine out daily, having easy access to fresh ingredients is key for preparing my own meals.

While flight and train connections can be conveniently researched online, evaluating the local community vibe and stress-testing the WiFi requires a personal touch. Thus, I’ve set my sights on potential locations in Southern Europe.

The plan? A trial run in a few select places to gauge their suitability, beginning with Cascais and Lisbon in Portugal come November 2024. With ten months ahead to save and strategize, this journey promises excitement and discovery. I’m committed to testing the waters – both metaphorically and perhaps literally.

As I gear up for this adventure, your thoughts, questions, and tips are not only welcome but encouraged. Stay tuned for more updates as we embark on this quest together. There’s a lot more to discuss, but that’s a story for another blog post. Until then, feel free to drop your questions, tips and comments below!
